Rochelle Harper a.k.a 'the Hippie Chick' and her partner Gary "Boz" Boswell have been a well-known performance team along the Gulf Coast since January 2002. Rochelle's evolution as a songwriter has lead her strongly in the direction of lyrics with a spiritual emphasis.
The Rochelle Harper Band is a hip six-piece, rockin' blues band best described as a "Genre Trip" performing blues, rock, folk, and country with a little bit-a funk thrown in! When Rochelle Harper (lead female vocalist and songwriter) takes the stage her soulful voice and energized stage presence captivates the entire audience who instantly feel connected with the music that the talented musicians in the band bring to the stage.

Collectively, Gary Boswell (lead guitar & vocals), Dan "Dr. Wind" Quibell (all saxophones, muted coronet, flugle horn and flute), Derrell Brown (keys, organ, strings, & vocals), Rick Gamard (upright and electric bass & vocals) and Johnny Hozey Jr., (drums & vocals) have thousands of live and studio performances running thru their veins and have opened for national musical acts such as Gatemouth Brown, Percy Sledge, Richie Havens, T-Bone Pruitt and Mobile local favorites, Wet Willy and Lisa Mills.
Harper also has a niche for getting the children involved with her "Sing & Shake" rendition of Van Morrison's, "Brown Eyed Girl." This exciting band ignites the stage by doing what they love; playing music that comes from their souls and spreading the kindness thru peace within music.
She continues to find players who have a strong faith and great musicianship to back up her lyrics, creating a vortex of love between the band and the audience.
If you are in the crowd you feel like your are on the stage and that Rochelle and each player is singing or playing directly to you.
If you're a guitarist then you are watching the Boz with his purely Rock-n-Roll guitar licks; that's where his heart is. His abilities go far beyond Rock-n-Roll and he and Rochelle have become a formidable musical team over the last couple of years.
Dan Quibell, a.k.a., Dr. Wind blows a variety of wind instruments. If you close your eyes when you see him pick up the flute and listen, you may feel like you're at some hippie rock-n-roll show back in the 60's or 70's. AMERICANA Baby. That's where RHB is at!!
Drummers are busy these days so at any given time you could find David White, Harrell Bosarge, Jeremy Hunt or Johnny Hozey Jr., playing with RHB. They are all fantastic drummers.
Locking in with their groove is Rick Gamard on Bass, and he adds to the band with his vocals.

Derrell Brown is playing keyboards and contributing his years of experience and his incredible talent. Derrell recently joined the band and is a staple here on the MS Gulf Coast.
His keyboard talent brings the listener into a variety of places depending on what style he's playing. He may play the Hammond B-3 or honkey tonk piano or good old fashioned blues. As soon as he starts singing you may think you're at an Allman Brothers show. Brotha has a voice.

SISTA JAZZ is the "Other Face" to the Rochelle Harper Band. In 2003, the Rochelle Harper Band began covering jazz songs ranging from the 20's up thru the 21st Century.
The guys dress in Zuit Suits and Fedora's and Rochelle wears gowns like Rosemary Clooney, adds gloves, maybe an Audrey Hepburn-styled hat or a headdress, and the scene brings the listener back to the 40's.
They cover songs made popular by Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Louie Armstrong as well as Etta James, Norah Jones and Sade. Swing, Torch and the occasional Brubeck Song.
Harper's philosophy on her Sista Jazz group can be summed up by the late great Ms. Billie Holiday who said, "I hate straight singing. I have to change a tune to my own way of doing it. That's all I know".
Originals, Covers, Rock, Blues, Country-Rock, "Jazz" and Christian music are what this band is playing. Basically, we're a "Genre Trip"!
Check out the Mississippi Gulf Coast's Observer for more local band information on the Gulf Coast.
